Our RV Setup: What We Drive, What We Changed, What We Would Do Differently

When people find out we live in an RV full-time with three kids, the first question is always: "What kind of RV do you have?" The second is: "Is it big enough?"

Here's the honest answer to both — plus everything we've modified, added, and learned the hard way.

The Rig

We chose a mid-size travel trailer that we can tow with a half-ton truck. It gives us enough space for the five of us without being a nightmare to park or burning through fuel. The key trade-off was livability vs. mobility — and for full-timing with kids, we lean toward mobility.

Modifications We Made

Mattress Upgrade

The stock mattress lasted exactly one night. We replaced it with a 10-inch memory foam mattress cut to fit, and it's been a game-changer for sleep quality on the road.

Storage Solutions

RV storage is a puzzle. We added hanging organizers in every closet, stackable bins under the dinette, and command hooks on every available wall. Every square inch has a job.

Water Filtration

Campground water quality varies wildly. We run an external filter on the hose and a under-sink filter for drinking water. Non-negotiable with little kids.

What We'd Do Differently

  • Invest in a better tow vehicle upfront — we pushed our truck's tow rating and paid for it in stress
  • Skip the built-in entertainment system — a tablet mount and Bluetooth speaker replaced it entirely
  • Get a trailer with a separate bedroom door — with kids who go to bed at 7:30, the adults need a living space that's not the bedroom

Bottom Line

There's no perfect RV. There's the one that fits your family, your budget, and your tow vehicle. Ours isn't fancy, but after years on the road, it's home.
