Herkimer Diamond Mines KOA Resort Review

The Full Review

We almost skipped Herkimer. It was supposed to be just an overnight on our way from PA Dutch Country to the Adirondacks. Then Lily read about the diamond mines in a kids’ travel book, and suddenly it was a three-night stay. Best decision we made that summer.

The KOA Resort sits right at the entrance to the Herkimer Diamond Mines, a world-famous geological site where you can actually dig for 500-million-year-old quartz crystals. The campground wraps this into a full resort experience with pools, creek tubing, gem panning, and enough activities to keep three kids occupied without a single screen.

Site & Setup 15/20

Sites are a mix of gravel and grass pull-throughs, mostly level with some minor shimming needed. The premium sites near the pool are wider and have concrete patios. Our site backed up to a wooded area, which gave us decent shade and privacy. Hookups were clean and well-maintained. The water pressure was excellent, better than most KOAs we have stayed at. The only knock is that some back-in sites near the mining entrance get foot traffic during peak hours.

The park layout is smart. They have separated the tent camping area from the RV section, which keeps the noise manageable. Golf cart rentals are available and honestly kind of necessary since the property sprawls across the hillside.

Connectivity 14/20

Cell service is rough. T-Mobile barely held two bars at our site, and even Starlink had intermittent drops, likely because the valley terrain blocks line of sight. The park Wi-Fi is free and surprisingly functional. We streamed a movie one evening without buffering, which is rare for campground Wi-Fi. Working remotely was possible but required patience during peak afternoon hours when every kid in the park was FaceTiming grandparents about their diamond finds.

Offspring & Family 15/15

This is where Herkimer earns its stripes. The diamond mine itself is an all-day activity. You get hammers and chisels, hike into a quarry, and crack open rocks looking for double-terminated quartz crystals. Lily found seven. Rose found three. Liam smashed rocks for two hours and found zero but declared it the best day ever. The gem mining flume is perfect for younger kids who want instant gratification.

The pool complex is excellent. The main pool is diamond-shaped (on brand), heated, and clean. There is a separate splash pad area for little ones. The creek that runs through the property is shallow enough for tubing, and they rent tubes at the camp store. The playground is newer equipment, well-maintained, and age-appropriate across the range.

Unity & Community 7/10

The vibe is overwhelmingly family. Lots of excited kids running around with bags of rocks. The staff are efficient but not particularly warm. It felt more commercial resort than cozy campground. We did not have much interaction with neighbors, which might be because everyone was too busy mining or swimming. Weekend evenings get loud near the pool pavilion with organized activities.

Territory & Location 12/15

Herkimer is in the Mohawk Valley, not exactly a tourism hotspot beyond the mines themselves. Groceries require a trip to Hannaford or Walmart in town, about 3 to 5 miles. The scenery is pleasant, rolling upstate New York hills with the creek winding through. It is not dramatic landscape, but it is green and peaceful. For day trips, the Adirondacks are about 90 minutes north, and Cooperstown (Baseball Hall of Fame) is about an hour south.

Essentials & Facilities 8/10

Bathhouses are solid for a KOA. Clean, well-lit, hot water. The laundry room has modern machines with card payment. The camp store is extensive, carrying everything from firewood to fossil kits. There is a small arcade and a game room that our kids visited exactly once before going back outside. The gem and mineral museum near the mining area is a nice educational touch.

Dollars & Value 8/10

This is where Herkimer loses points. KOA Resort pricing is premium. We paid around $85 per night for a premium pull-through in July, which is steep for upstate New York. Mining passes are extra on top of that. Factor in gem panning, tube rentals, and the inevitable camp store purchases, and a three-night stay adds up fast. That said, the experience is unique enough that we did not feel ripped off. You are paying for something you genuinely cannot get elsewhere.
