Thousand Trails Lake Gaston Review

The Full Review

Lake Gaston was a routing decision. We were heading south on a long haul from Pennsylvania to Florida and needed to split the drive somewhere around the Virginia-North Carolina border. Lake Gaston TT appeared on the map, we had the membership, and it was free. Zero expectations.

Then we pulled in and saw the lake through the trees, and the kids immediately started asking if we could stay longer. We did not, but we wanted to. That says something about a transit park.

Site & Setup 12/20

Sites are grass and gravel, carved into a wooded hillside that slopes down toward the lake. Most need some leveling since the terrain is naturally uneven. Our site was shaded by mature hardwoods, which was lovely but meant the ground was soft and slightly muddy from recent rain. Hookups were standard TT quality. Full hookups on the premium sites, water and electric only on the standard ones. The drive-in was tight for our rig, but manageable.

Connectivity 10/20

Bracey, Virginia is rural. Cell service reflects that. T-Mobile was two bars on a good moment, and the park Wi-Fi was free but clubhouse-centric. Working remotely would require Starlink or a booster. We were only there one night so it did not matter, but anyone planning an extended stay should plan accordingly. This is a disconnect-and-decompress kind of park.

Offspring & Family 8/15

The pool was closed during our April visit, which is expected for a seasonal park. The playground was basic but functional. The lake itself is the activity. There is a small beach area, fishing access, and canoe rentals available in season. For one night, the kids explored the wooded trails around our site and threw rocks in the lake until dinner. For a longer stay, the swimming and water activities would be the draw.

Unity & Community 7/10

The park was quiet during our midweek April visit. A handful of seasonal rigs and one other overnighter. The camp host was friendly and gave us a quick rundown of the property. The vibe was peaceful and unhurried. For a transit stop, that is exactly right. We heard frogs and crickets, not generators and music.

Territory & Location 14/15

The lake setting is genuinely beautiful. Lake Gaston is a large reservoir that straddles the Virginia-North Carolina border, surrounded by forest. The scenery is excellent for the mid-Atlantic. Groceries are a drive. Food Lion is about 10 miles. Walmart is 20 miles in South Hill. The area is rural with limited dining options. If you are transiting, stock up before arriving.

For a longer stay, the lake offers boating, fishing, and swimming. The nearest town of any size is South Hill, which has basics but nothing exciting.

Essentials & Facilities 8/10

The bathhouse was clean and functional for a TT park. The laundry room had working machines. The clubhouse has a small kitchen area and gathering space. Nothing fancy, but everything worked and was maintained. The park clearly gets more attention during the summer season.

Dollars & Value 8/10

With a TT membership, the standard sites are included in your membership at no nightly cost. That makes the value proposition excellent for a transit stop. Even the premium sites are modestly priced. For what you get, a beautiful lakeside setting with full hookups and peace and quiet, the value is strong. Booking through the TT app worked without issues.
