Stop Paying State Income Tax.
How we legally eliminated our state tax bill as full-time RVers โ and how you can too.
One of the biggest surprises when we started full-timing was how complicated state taxes get when you don't have a fixed address. You're moving between states every few weeks, tracking days of presence, wondering which state is going to come knocking for income tax.
For us, the answer was establishing domicile in Florida. Zero state income tax. No estate tax. And with the right setup, it's completely legal and straightforward.
The tool that made it painless? SavvyNomad.
The Problem: Where Do You "Live" When You Live Everywhere?
As full-time RVers, we don't have a traditional home address. But the IRS and state tax agencies still need to know where you're domiciled. If you're still technically a resident of a state like New York (up to 10.9%), California (up to 13.3%), or Illinois (4.95%), you're paying state income tax on everything you earn โ even if you haven't set foot there in months.
โ ๏ธ The 183-Day Rule: Most states consider you a statutory resident โ and want their cut of your income โ if you're physically present for 183+ days in a tax year. Even partial days count in some states (looking at you, New York and California).
We actually built a custom state day tracker into our booking dashboard to monitor exactly this. But the real move is picking the right domicile state so those numbers don't matter as much.

What Is SavvyNomad?
SavvyNomad is a service built specifically for full-time travelers, RVers, digital nomads, and expats who want to establish Florida residency without the confusion of doing it alone. They handle the paperwork, give you a real address, manage your mail, and keep you compliant long-term.
Here's what they handle:
๐ก Residential Florida Address
You get a real residential address at an RV & Mobile Home community in Sumter County โ about an hour from Orlando and Tampa. This isn't a PO Box or a virtual office. It's a legitimate residential address that works for your driver's license, voter registration, banking, insurance, and tax returns.
๐ Domicile Filing
They walk you through the Declaration of Domicile process and handle the paperwork. The whole thing can be notarized online in about 10 minutes.
๐ฌ Mail Scanning & Forwarding
All your mail gets received at your Florida address. They scan it so you can view everything from your dashboard, and they'll forward physical mail anywhere in the world when you need it. IRS notices, state documents, credit cards โ it all gets handled.
โ Compliance Monitoring
This is the part most people skip when they DIY it. SavvyNomad keeps you on track with the ongoing steps that maintain your domicile โ like keeping your Florida driver's license current, using your FL address on tax documents, and avoiding creating competing ties in other states.
๐งพ CPA Access
They connect you with independent CPAs who specialize in expat and nomad tax situations. Full tax preparation is also available starting at $450.

Understanding Domicile as an RVer
Here's the thing most people don't realize: domicile is your legal home โ the place you intend to return to, even if you're away for long stretches. As an RVer, you get to choose your domicile. It doesn't have to be where you currently are, and it doesn't require you to own property there.
But you need to be intentional about it. Courts have found that simply filing paperwork isn't enough if you never demonstrate real ties to the state. With SavvyNomad, you get a checklist and compliance monitoring so your domicile actually holds up under scrutiny.
๐จ Cautionary tale: In the Sanchez case, a taxpayer lost their Florida domicile claim because they couldn't demonstrate they'd actually spent any time in the state. Filing paperwork is step one โ but maintaining real ties is what makes it stick.
Key steps that demonstrate intent:
- Florida driver's license (one of the strongest proofs)
- Voter registration in Florida
- FL address on all tax returns, W-2s, and 1099s
- Florida vehicle registration
- Florida bank accounts and insurance
- Avoid creating competing ties in other states
The Vehicle & License Side
Getting a Florida driver's license is a key part of establishing domicile โ SavvyNomad walks you through the whole process. For vehicle registration, Florida requires a vehicle verification when registering out-of-state vehicles, but here's the good news: it can often be completed by approved officials outside Florida. You don't necessarily have to drive your rig down there just to re-register.
What It Costs (and Why the Math Is Obvious)
Plans start at $55/month for the base domicile plan:
๐ก The quick math:
If you're paying even 5% state income tax on $80K, that's $4,000/year gone. SavvyNomad costs about $660/year. That's a 6x return on day one โ and the gap only grows with income.
Who Is This For?
SavvyNomad is purpose-built for:
- Full-time RVers who need a legal domicile but don't own a sticks-and-bricks home
- Digital nomads working remotely while traveling the US or abroad
- Expats living overseas who are still filing US taxes from a high-tax state
- Snowbirds who split time between states and want to formalize Florida
- Remote workers who realized they don't need to be a resident of the state their employer is in
If you earn income and are currently domiciled in a state with income tax โ but you don't actually live there anymore โ you're probably overpaying.

Our Take
We were already tracking our state days obsessively (seriously โ we built a whole dashboard for it). But SavvyNomad took the actual domicile setup from a confusing research project to a checked-off task. The process was clear, the support was solid, and the peace of mind of knowing our Florida domicile is properly maintained is worth it alone.
If you're a full-time RVer, digital nomad, or expat still domiciled in a state that's taxing your income โ this is probably the single highest-ROI financial move you can make.
